Biography:
Myllissa Pena-Wyatt grew up in Pocatello, Idaho. The family was “set” with two boys and two girls and then nine years later a surprise Myllissa came along! After her siblings left the nest, she grew up with parents that were a little older and as an adult, she developed a special interest in gerontology, the study of geriatrics. Her father struggled with Alzheimer’s for many years and fortunately her mother, well into her 80s, is very active. Having older parents gave firsthand experience with the health and vitality challenges of aging allowing Myllissa a unique empathy for older adults.
In 1996, Myllissa received a degree in nursing from Idaho State University in Pocatello, Idaho. She practiced at Portneuf Medical Center in Pocatello working as a charge nurse in cardiac, medical and surgical intensive care, as well as, the emergency room for many years. Myllissa was also lucky enough to have the opportunity to practice in New Zealand for several years splitting her time as a charge nurse between a geriatric care center and a ski hill clinic. In 2009, she decided to further her career and returned to Idaho State University. Myllissa received her master’s degree as a Family Nurse Practitioner in 2012 and returning to work for Portneuf Medical Center.
Myllissa and her husband Dusty have been together for twenty years and have four children. Medicine truly is a family affair as Dusty works at Steele Memorial Medical Center as a surgical nurse. Dusty is an excellent chef, once owning his own restaurant before deciding to pursue a career in nursing. Becoming a nurse has allowed him more time to travel and spend with his family. They have two college age children, daughter Sunny recently finished her undergraduate degree and is planning to apply for medical school and son Talon who attended college on a soccer scholarship and is currently a soccer coach in Pocatello, Idaho. The younger brood is 8 year old daughter Rudi and 6 year old son Tane’(named after a New Zealand tree God).
Myllissa and Dusty are true outdoor enthusiasts. Their hobbies include snow skiing, mountain biking, camping and fishing. Myllissa is learning how to kayak since moving to Salmon. Their special hobby has been rock climbing. They have climbed all over the world including three months in Greece, a total of six months in Asia and three years in Australia and New Zealand. The pair and their two older children once traveled and back-packed for nine months in New Zealand going from hut to hut and visiting twelve of the thirteen national parks and forests, all on just $2,500! They returned home penniless, which was all a part of the adventure!
In 2014, the family moved to Salmon because they were drawn by the small town setting and great community. They enjoy that Salmon is a mecca for outdoor enthusiasts and the people are down-to-earth and approachable. Myllissa loves living in a community that feels “like home” and is safe for her young children.
Myllissa enjoys working at SMMC because of the people, she says “everyone is always so helpful and friendly and it’s a great place for learning”. She appreciates how others in the clinic and in the community share their knowledge. Myllissa shared a favorite memory at SMMC, where she walked into a patient’s hospital room and his very active 75 year old spouse was playing hacky sack and commented how she needed to work on her “toe snap”! She gave this as an example of the health, vitality and the “laid-back” demeanor of the many older residents that she has met.
Her message to the community is also her favorite motto: “Peace of mind is the best medicine. Knowing your health status and knowing what you can do to better it, whether it be medication, a supplement, exercising, eating right or seeing your provider, peace of mind is always the best medicine.”
