Biography: Clare York grew up in the hustle and bustle of Orange County, California. She was raised in a moderately large, hardworking family with two sisters and a brother. Her father is a retired engineer and her mother, a retired newspaper editor.
Clare attended California State Polytechnic University in Pomona, California receiving a Bachelor’s of Science in Biology. In 1998, Clare moved to Iowa City, Iowa to attend The University of Iowa for her graduate studies and went on to receive her Master’s Degree in Physician Assistant Studies (PA) from the University of Iowa in 2000. Choosing physician assistant studies due to an introduction she received during undergraduate school led to setting aside biology and taking up an interest in people. She specifically chose to become a physician assistant because of the “team approach to healthcare created by working with a supervising physician to increase quality and access to healthcare”.
Helping people is Clare’s passion and she has over 14 years of experience of doing just that. Her 14 years have been spent in surgery, emergency medicine and preventive medicine. She has worked at Kaiser Permanente in San Diego, California practicing preventive medicine and St. Joseph Hospital (SJO) and Children’s Hospital of Orange County (CHOC) practicing emergency medicine. SJO and CHOC share a 53 bed emergency department and has the distinction of being the second busiest emergency department in California. In 2010, Clare decided to leave the fast paced atmosphere of emergency medicine to work in the private sector of assisting in surgery with Dr. Daniel Mills, M.D., F.A.C.S., in Laguna Beach, California.
In 2011, Clare met her fiancé, Aaron Peets. Aaron is a local builder and creates custom stone countertops. Currently, the two are building a beautifully handcrafted home. She can now claim to be an amateur carpenter and professional physician assistant. Besides working on their home until late into the night, they enjoy cooking, hiking, snowshoeing, floating on the river and learning the art of backcountry skiing. Once the home is complete, she would like to take up traveling again.
Clare joined the Steele Memorial Clinic team in 2013. She enjoys working at SMMC because of her hardworking colleagues and especially her supervising physician, Dr. Samuel Gardner.
Clare was surprised to learn that Idaho has consistently ranked at or near the bottom for breast cancer screening and in 2011, Idaho ranked last of 50 states for mammogram screening. Mammography is an important tool in making early diagnosis of breast cancer and saving lives and she would like to improve the rates of breast cancer screening in our area.
Her message to the community is: “Promote healthy lifestyles and preventive medicine.”
