Biography:
Bruce Hayward grew up in south Denver in the late 50’s and 60’s back when Denver still had the feel of a small town (almost)! Dr. Hayward is the oldest of his five siblings, four brothers and a sister who was the caboose of the family, coming along twelve years after Dr. Hayward. Besides the large family in Denver, he also shares a larger extended clan from his Mother’s side of the family who reside in Wisconsin.
In 1973, Dr. Hayward graduated cum laude from Regi College in Denver, Colorado with a Bachelor of Science degree. He then attended the Texas College of Osteopathic Medicine in Fort Worth, Texas graduating in 1978. Following medical school, he completed a rotating internship at Rocky Mountain Hospital in Denver. Dr. Hayward has been practicing medicine for thirty five years, with nine of those years at Steele Memorial Medical Center. He is board certified in Family Medicine and was a family medicine practitioner in private practice in the Denver area for many years. When he moved to Ennis, Montana Dr. Hayward did it all, from family medicine to emergency medicine. After nine years, at the urging of his Medical Director, he made the decision to practice emergency medicine only.
Outside of practicing in Salmon, Dr. Hayward received a gubernatorial appointment in 2010 to the Montana Board of Medical Examiners where he currently serves as President. He is also an Aviation Medical Examiner and has been administering FAA exams since 1993.
Marrying young, after his junior year in college, he has three adult children from his first wife, two girls and a boy and each of his daughters have given him two grandchildren who all live in the Denver area. In 2003, Dr. Hayward married Lori who he met in Ennis, Montana, where she was working as a certified medical assistant. Lori has many nieces and a nephew living in the area adding to his large extended family.
Dr. Hayward’s hobbies include winter snow skiing, snow shoeing, and camping, fishing and gardening in the summer. Dr. Hayward and Lori especially enjoy taking care of their two miniature donkeys! He appreciates the easygoing, laid-back lifestyle of rural country living and enjoys spending time helping his in-laws with their ranch.
Bruce Hayward, DO movie star! Well, maybe not quite a movie star, but he was a movie extra in the 1998 Steven Segal action thriller, -The Patriot. His role was… an emergency doctor (talk about type casting)! What was exciting and interesting for him was not that he was in a movie but being able to learn how movies were made. He was also interviewed for the PBS news broadcast program The MacNeil/Lehrer Report while he was in private practice in Denver.
Dr. Hayward enjoys practicing emergency medicine at SMMC and enjoys the variety of cases presented to him in the emergency department. He explained that very often you can make a real difference in someone’s life. Dr. Hayward commented that “SMMC is probably the friendliest and teamwork oriented hospital that I’ve ever seen”. A favorite memory for Dr. Hayward was being able to deliver a baby when there was no time to transfer the patient to the OB department.
His message to the community is: “Be responsible for your health!” “We can do a lot of things as physicians and providers, but everyone needs to be responsible for their health and we can help them with that.”
