Biography: Samuel D. Gardner, DO was born June 15, 1966, in Blackfoot, Idaho. He lived in many different locations growing up but always came back to Idaho. Grandparents, Keith & Kit Elison and his mother ranched down the Lemhi at 17 mile in the 1940’s and fell in love with Salmon. He grew up hearing wonderful stories of the Salmon River Valley. Dr. Gardner earned the rank of Eagle Scout and Order of the Arrow, which along with family outings, allowed him firsthand experience scouting and enjoying hunting and fishing throughout Southern and Central Idaho.
He began college at Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah as a Microbiology major, but later changed to Chemistry and Italian. After his first year of college, he took 2 years off to serve a mission in Southern Italy. After his mission, he went back to BYU and graduated in the spring of 1990 and entered medical school at Des Moines University, Iowa. This medical school was founded in 1898 and has a tradition of preparing many new doctors for primary care in rural America.
After graduating from medical school, Dr. Gardner continued working three additional years for specialty training in Family Practice at Broadlawns Medical Center. In 1971, Broadlawns became one of the first hospitals in the United States to offer a three year training program for Family Practice Specialists. After completing his first year in training, Dr. Gardner married Amanda Cameron, from Blackfoot, Idaho. Amanda lived next door to Dr. Gardner's Elison grandparents in Blackfoot, until she went away for college. Amanda earned an Associate's degree in Architecture from Ricks College in Rexburg. She then studied at the University of Idaho in Moscow and after a year, followed her older brothers to the University of New Mexico, where they worked as professors in applied math, electronics and computing. There she completed her education in communications with an emphasis in American Sign Language.
Dr. Gardner and his wife Amanda both knew they wanted to return to Idaho. In 1996 after looking at many opportunities, they felt very comfortable with a decision to move to Salmon. In July 1997, after passing Family Practice Specialty board exams, Dr. Gardner joined Steele Memorial Hospital. The first few years brought many transitions as Steele Memorial Hospital evolved into Steele Memorial Medical Center. As the hospital grew so did the Gardner Family. Salmon and the Gardners welcomed Cameron and Dee born January 5, 2000. They spent nearly a month in the newborn intensive care before coming home. Soon after, came Katie on September 21, 2001. The biggest surprise was when the Gardners found out they were going to have triplets. Amanda spent a month in the hospital before they were born January 28, 2003, and tended them for another 2 ½ months before they could bring them home. Dr. Gardner's parents decided on early retirement and move to Salmon to help. Dr. Gardner's parents had never discussed their desire to retire to Salmon until he told them he had accepted a position there. On January 23, 2008, little Mandy "Bubbles" was born, she only spent a week in the newborn intensive care. Then December 10, 2010, their newest daughter Konnie was born. Dr. Gardner and Amanda warmly remember all the community support they received as they welcomed new family members into their home. Dr. Gardner says, "I don't believe we could have started our family so comfortably in any other community. Our kids had lots of needs and we felt the whole community took us in as family. I've never experienced this before in any community!"
Dr. Gardner has found great satisfaction working and living in Salmon. Helping build a new hospital and establishing a stable medical staff, wasn't easy. Dr. Gardner served as Chief of Staff for 9 years. "It is exciting to see where we are today! The work is challenging but the rewards have been great by being a part of this community. I'm proud to be associated with Steele Memorial Medical Center and Salmon, and all the surrounding area should be too.”
Dr. Gardner’s message to the community is: “Whatever level of health you are at, it can always be improved by a positive attitude.”
More/Other Information: Dr. Gardner has been with Steele Memorial Medical Center since 1997.
