Biography: Stewart Godbey Carrington, MD was born in Henderson, Texas. He grew up in Shreveport and Natchitoches, Louisiana, with his father (Methodist minister), mother (schoolteacher), and two older brothers who also went on to work in the medical field—one a psychiatrist and the other a pharmacist. He is married with four daughters, and one son (deceased).
Dr. Carrington attended Centenary College in Shreveport, Louisiana, where he obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in Biology. In 1957, he received his Medical Degree from Louisiana State University (New Orleans) and served a one-year internship at Confederate Memorial Medical Center, now known as Louisiana State University-School of Medicine, Shreveport. After his internship, he opened a private practice in Benton, Louisiana, from 1958 to 1965. In 1965, he was awarded a three-year fellowship in Dermatology at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, and while there also earned a Master’s Degree in Electromicroscopy. After his fellowship, Dr. Carrington opened a private Dermatology practice in Mobile, Alabama, taught at the University of South Alabama-College of Medicine and for a short time, served as Assistant Dean at the University. In 1990, he and his family moved across the country to Pocatello, Idaho, where he established a private practice associated with Portneuf Medical Center where he served a one-year term as Chief of Staff. In 1999, Dr. Carrington and his wife, Dr. Hope Benedict, a native of Lemhi County, moved to Salmon, Idaho, where he accepted a position at Steele Memorial Medical Center.
Dr. Carrington chose Salmon because he likes the small town atmosphere stating, “It’s a very good place to practice. The facilities are great, the patient base is very good, the people are more committed to others’ welfare, and they are more connected to one another.” He most enjoys his profession for the interaction with his patients and the satisfaction of helping them get well. His favorite memory at SMMC was as a patient when he received the “excellent post-operative care” provided by the SMMC staff.
Dr. Carrington is a Diplomate of the American Board of Dermatology, a Fellow of the American Academy of Dermatology, and a member of the Idaho Medical Association. Outside of work, he keeps his mind busy by playing the piano, learning new music, staying up to date on current events, and exercising. He also enjoys reading war history, mysteries, and working in the yard. Dr. Carrington’s message to the community is, “Prevention: Do not ignore the symptoms. Listen to what your body is telling you.”
